Credit Card and Bank Stories

Share/Save/Bookmark

This is about the the fiftieth time I have typed and told this story.  I have had a Chase credit card for at least five years.  I have never been late on a payment and always pay much more than the minimum amount.  My initial interest rate was 8.9%.  In December of 2009, Chase arbitrarily raised my interest rate 6 percentage points.  I guess they wanted to make sure they beat the government to the punch...they sure did.

Chase, which lowered my available credit from 11,000 to 4500 in 2009, took my interest rate from 0 all the way to the current 29.99% over the past year - the higest rate they charge. When I asked the representative what they based that on, they said it's based on a  'credit evaluation' but would not tell me what that included, or what it was that had them considering me a risk of loss, when I pay ontime, automatically, and have good credit, and at one point they considered me enough of a credit asset to offer me 0%. He continued to say it's not based on my credit score, it's based on a 'credit evaluation' but could never tell me what that included or why, for my account specifically, they had chosen the credit rating associated with the highest possible risk. He said there is nothing he can do for me.

They told me a new card would arrive withing 5-7 business days. Until
then, I'm stuck using my credit card and paying them interest, and
this morning, unless I want to wait in the long lines at the bank for
a temporary card. My account has been charged $25 for the reissue of
a new card that I didn't request (or even authorize). I'm assuming
that the long list of people (too long to call or email) are all
getting hit with this $25 charge. The fraud department blamed the
bank and the bank blamed the fraud department and no one is able to
rush deliver me an ATM card or explain what merchant "compromised" the
number.

I'd like to cancel all my accounts at JP Morgan Chase, but I do admit
that I'm a little bit afraid that they'll lose my money in the process
and forget to tell me.

They said "no, we want you to pay off the entire credit card balance now and if we see any money coming into any Wells Fargo account of yours, we will take it." No matter how much we tried to talk, they became more belligerent, obnoxious and threatening. We could not get any reaction. Not only that, the next day all those checks bounced and they also charged us "insufficient funds fee" for each check that bounced because of their stealing our money from one account and putting it another.

I know that the whole deal sounded weird from the get go, but we said if the check clears then what the heck, who cares how this guy wants to pay for it.  And that is why I made sure I said that I needed to know when the check would be cleared and we would be sure that the check was good.  If the clerk had said that it would show up in my account in 24 hours, but we would not be totally sure that the check was good for 12 - 14 days we would have told the guy in Africa that we would not be going forward with anything for three weeks or more.  But they told me 24 hours, and I trusted that they knew what they were talking about.  Isn't that their job, to inform their customers and to help ensure our financial safety?
